Suffolk, Virginia
Suffolk is an independent city in Virginia. With a population of 94,324 as of 2020, it is the 10th most populous city in the state. Covering the largest land area of any city in Virginia, Suffolk is also the 14th largest by land area in the U.S. With miles of waterfront along the Nansemond and James rivers, Suffolk was formed in 1974.
Suffolk became a member of our community in 2017 when we conducted our first Pavement and Asset Inspection. We gathered data for 1535 miles of roadway, formatted to meet ASTM D6433 standards. This information was uploaded into PAVER, allowing us to generate customized reports. The asset extraction included data on 13,165 signs, road striping, markings, and crosswalks.
In 2020, Suffolk brought us back for an updated Pavement and Asset Inspection. This time, we surveyed 1,864 miles of roadway, again adhering to ASTM D6433 standards. The collected data was used to create a Pavement Condition Index (PCI map) and a 5-year maintenance plan for the city. Additionally, we extracted data for 17,216 signs, representing a $7.7 million sign network, and updated road striping and markings.
In 2024, we returned for another pavement inspection. We gathered data on 1,864 miles of roadway. We conducted a True Area analysis to develop a VDOT Critical Condition Index for the city. This new data was integrated into the existing PAVER database, building on our previous inspections.
